1. Supply of 42CrMo4 steel
Siderticino supplies 42CrMo4 steel (material number 1.7225), a chromium-molybdenum alloy quenched and tempered steel according to EN 10083-3, used for mechanical components subject to fatigue and torsional stress – transmission shafts, gears, pins, connecting rods, tie rods and components requiring high strength even in medium-large sections. The good hardenability provided by chromium and molybdenum makes it the reference standard when C45 does not guarantee sufficient quenching depth.
The range includes semi-finished bar and plate products in the main production executions, with cutting to size, third-party heat treatment and certification on request. The product list above can be filtered by execution, type, section and delivery condition; for a quote on a specific item, simply request a quote indicating the format and quantity.
2. Available formats and executions
42CrMo4 is available as round bar and as plate block, in various executions. The following items correspond to the filters in the product list, where each item links to the relevant detail page and quote request.
2.1. Bars: rounds
42CrMo4 bars are supplied in rounds, in the entire range of executions (forged, hot-rolled, cold-drawn, peeled, ground, hard-chrome plated). The round is the format of choice for producing shafts, pins, spindles, tie rods and transmission components to be machined on machine tools.
2.2. Plates and blocks
For applications requiring a flat starting point, plate blocks in 42CrMo4 are available in hot-rolled execution, suitable for cutting plates, dies and mechanical bases. Shaping and cutting to the required size can be agreed upon at the time of order.
2.3. Executions and surface finishes
The available executions meet different tolerance and finish requirements: forged and hot-rolled for semi-finished products to be machined and for large sections, cold-drawn and peeled for tighter dimensional tolerances and clean surfaces, ground for rounds requiring maximum dimensional precision, hard-chrome plated for rods and sliding applications. The choice of execution affects downstream machining and should be evaluated based on the final component.
3. Delivery conditions of 42CrMo4
42CrMo4 is supplied predominantly in the quenched and tempered (+QT) condition, ready for use in components requiring in-service mechanical properties. Other delivery conditions can also be handled depending on the machinability or dimensional stability required.
The optimal delivery condition is defined based on the intended machining and the required hardness, and can be indicated at the quote stage; Siderticino’s technical support assists in selecting the most suitable option for the component.
4. Machining and certification services
In addition to supplying the material, Siderticino offers services on 42CrMo4 that reduce incoming machining and ensure batch traceability.
4.1. Cutting to size
42CrMo4 bars can be supplied cut to the required length, reducing waste and workshop preparation time. Details of the service are described on the steel cutting to size page.
4.2. Third-party heat treatment
42CrMo4 can be supplied already quenched and tempered to the required mechanical condition, or third-party heat treatment can be arranged on the ordered material. Nitriding and surface hardening can also be performed on 42CrMo4, treatments consistent with its use on shafts and gears, without the customer having to separately arrange the treatment stage.
4.3. EN 10204 certification
Every supply is accompanied by a 2.1 inspection certificate and, on request, a 3.1 certificate according to EN 10204, with traceability of chemical composition and mechanical characteristics of the batch. The 3.1 is the document required for orders where full material traceability is necessary.
5. How to request a quote
For a quote on 42CrMo4, indicate the format (round, plate), execution, delivery condition, any cutting to size and quantity: request a quote and the technical-sales office will check availability, delivery times and updated pricing. To estimate the weight of semi-finished products in advance, the steel bar weight calculator tool is available.
