C45 Steel: bars, plates and cutting to size

We supply C45 steel (1.0503, non-alloy quenched and tempered steel EN 10083-2) in bars – rounds, flats, squares, hexagons – and plate blocks, in forged, hot-rolled, cold-drawn, peeled, ground and hard-chrome plated execution. Cutting to size, subcontracted heat treatments and EN 10204 certification (2.1 as standard, 3.1 on request).

1. Supply of C45 steel

Siderticino supplies C45 steel (material number 1.0503), a non-alloy carbon quenched and tempered steel according to EN 10083-2, used for general-purpose mechanical components subject to moderate stresses – shafts, pins, bushings, tie rods, gears and parts to be machined on machine tools. Good machinability and the possibility of surface quenching make it a popular choice when the performance of alloy steels is not required.

The range includes semi-finished products in bar and plate form in the main production executions, with cutting to size, subcontracted heat treatment and certification on request. The product list above can be filtered by execution, type, section and delivery condition; for an offer on a specific item, simply request a quote indicating format and quantity.

2. Available formats and executions

C45 is available as bar and as plate block, in various sections and executions. The following items correspond to the filters in the product list, where each item links to its detail page and quote request.

2.1. Bars: rounds, flats, squares and hexagons

C45 bars are supplied in rounds, flats, squares and hexagons. Rounds cover the entire range of executions (forged, hot-rolled, cold-drawn, peeled, ground, hard-chrome plated), while flats, squares and hexagons are typically hot-rolled or cold-drawn. These are the formats of choice for shafts, pins, tie rods, fasteners and mechanical components to be machined on machine tools.

2.2. Plates and blocks

For applications requiring flat starting stock, plate blocks in C45 are available in forged and hot-rolled execution, suitable for cutting plates, dies and mechanical bases. Shaping and cutting to the required size can be agreed upon at the time of order.

2.3. Executions and surface finishes

The available executions meet different tolerance and finish requirements: forged and hot-rolled for semi-finished products to be machined and for large sections, cold-drawn and peeled for tighter dimensional tolerances and clean surfaces, ground for rounds requiring maximum dimensional precision, hard-chrome plated for rods and sliding applications. The choice of execution affects downstream machining and should be evaluated based on the final component.

3. Delivery conditions of C45

C45 is stocked in as-rolled (untreated) and normalized (+N) conditions, suitable for subsequent machining and heat treatments. Quenching and tempering (+QT), annealing and surface quenching are handled as on-request processing, so that the material is delivered already in the functional condition for its intended use.

The optimal delivery condition is defined based on the intended machining and required hardness, and can be indicated when requesting a quote; Siderticino’s technical support assists in choosing the most suitable option for the component.

4. Machining and certification services

In addition to supplying the material, Siderticino offers services on C45 that reduce incoming machining and ensure batch traceability.

4.1. Cutting to size

C45 bars can be supplied cut to the required length, reducing waste and workshop preparation time. Details of the service are described on the steel cutting to size page.

4.2. Subcontracted heat treatment

For C45, subcontracted heat treatment – quenching and tempering, annealing or induction and flame surface quenching – can be managed on the ordered material. Surface quenching, in particular, allows hard surfaces to be obtained on shafts, pinions and splined profiles while maintaining a tough core, without the customer having to separately arrange the treatment phase.

4.3. EN 10204 certification

Every supply is accompanied by a 2.1 inspection certificate and, on request, a 3.1 certificate according to EN 10204, with traceability of the batch’s chemical composition and mechanical properties. The 3.1 certificate is the document required in projects where full material traceability is necessary.

5. How to request a quote

For an offer on C45, indicate the format (round, flat, square, hexagon, plate), execution, delivery condition, any cutting to size and quantity: request a quote and the technical-sales team will check availability, delivery times and updated pricing. To estimate the weight of semi-finished products in advance, the steel bar weight calculator is available.

6. Technical specifications of C45

For material data – EN 10083-2 chemical composition, mechanical properties in normalized and quenched and tempered condition by size class, heat treatments, hardness and international equivalents – see the complete technical specifications of C45. For the choice between similar grades, the data sheets for 42CrMo4 and 39NiCrMo3 may also be useful.
